Sophie Hannah’s new book is perfect for fans of podcasts like Serial or Up and Vanished. Fans of Netflix’s Making a Murderer will enjoy this story, as well.
Unlike the true crime series’ listed above, Sophie Hannah’s new book is fictional. Still, it’s every bit as fascinating as those true crime documentaries and podcasts you’ve become obsessed with.
Keep Her Safe tells the story of a British woman on holiday in Arizona. Cara Burrows has taken off from home without so much as a word to her own family, blowing a third of her life savings on a two week stay at a swanky spa.
Sophie Hannah’s New Book Got My Attention Quickly
Keep Her Safe: A NovelHave you ever daydreamed about picking up, leaving life behind, and checking into a spa resort for a few days?
As a mother, the book drew me in from the first page because, in my mind, I have daydreamed time and again about packing up, checking into a luxurious hotel, and staying there in absolute silence for a weekend while my husband tends to my family. Some days, I would be happy with a solid eight hours of sleep.
And in Sophie Hannah’s new book, here’s Cara, acting on that fantasy, leaving her teenage kids with her husband, and flying across the world to the swankiest place she can find—for a solid two weeks of sleep. What I wouldn’t do for two weeks of solid sleep.
Why Read Sophie Hannah’s New Book, Keep Her Safe?
That’s not exactly what happens though, of course. When Cara checks into the hotel, she’s sent to a room that is already occupied—by a girl who is supposed to be dead.
At the time of her death, Melody Chapa was one of the most famous murder victims in America. Think Caylee Anthony, Trayvon Martin, Nicole Simpson. In the world Sophie Hannah has created, Melody Chapa is on the same level as some of the most famous murder victims we’ve ever seen in the United States.
Only, as Cara quickly discovers, Melody isn’t dead. She’s alive and well, and hanging out in one of the most expensive spa resorts in the world.
Enter Bonnie Juno (think Nancy Grace), an extensive plot to convict an innocent person of murder, and an elaborate coverup plan.
Keep Her Safe by Sophie Hannah is both captivating and inventive and absolutely worth the read. It’s one I couldn’t put down, and if you’re into those true crime drama series, I believe this story will captivate your imagination, as well.
